YMMV / Star Trek: The Next Generation S4E17 "Night Terrors"

  • Awesome Music: Ron Jones again, providing a very unnerving piece for the episode that helps set the tone.
  • Narm:
    • As unbelievable as it might sound, the loss of REM sleep leading to Sanity Slippage and eventual death is in fact 100% scientifically accurate. Unfortunately, this fact is delivered in goofy-sounding lines such as "We have to dream in order to survive," meaning that it can come across as the show playing fast-and-loose with science once again.
    • Troi's recurring nightmare makes for a legitimately creepy and atmospheric scene... Until she starts flying that is; not only is the effect itself rather unconvincing, it also invites at least a dozen Peter Pan references.
    • Captain Zaheva's log entry is meant to be a creepy Apocalyptic Log showing her descent into madness, but between the fact that we don't see her before she started losing her mind, and her actress hamming it up to ridiculous levels, the end result is far more comical than it is scary.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Crusher's hallucination in the morgue of the corpses sitting up.
  • Special Effects Failure:
    • The entirely unconvincing shrinking turbolift. Which is embarrassingly obviously just the camera zooming in, and Stewart sitting down.
    • The Brattain has its name misspelled as "Brittain" on the model shots, despite the bridge set and Captain Zaheva's log both making it clear what the ship's correct name is meant to be.
