YMMV / Star Trek S3 E18 "The Lights of Zetar"

  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • Reportedly, James Doohan performed this episode under protest because he didn't think it believable that "an old Aberdeen pub crawler" like Scotty would fall madly in love with a bookworm like Mira.
    • David Gerrold agreed in his book The World of Star Trek, saying that Mira's character wasn't sufficiently delineated so that Scotty was acting like a lovesick teenager over a woman who seemed to have nothing more going for her than a short skirt and a good bust measurement.
  • Values Dissonance: This bit of joking dialogue about Scotty's attraction to Mira makes men of the 23rd century seem about as enlightened as the stereotypical men of the 1960s. And it doesn't paint Scotty in the best light by today's standards.
Chekov: "I didn't think Mister Scott would go for the brainy type."
Sulu:: "I don't think he's even noticed she has a brain."
