  • With the station's original creation left a mystery, a popular theory is that its creators really did practice complete altruism, but somewhere along the line its programming was damaged and it now keeps itself functioning in the only way it can.
  • Was Phlox actually telling the truth when he said that the station's other victims were irreversibly brain-damaged, or was he lying to make Travis and Archer feel less guilty (Travis for being the only one to be rescued and Archer because he wasn't able to save any of the other people)? And does Archer in particular believe Phlox, or does he suspect he's lying but accept it for his own peace of mind?
• They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Most reviewers think that while this is a pretty decent episode, it missed an opportunity to play up the horror element more, and the reveal of what was actually powering the station came far too late in the story for it to really be effective.
