YMMV / SpongeBob SquarePants S 1 E 17 "Arrgh!" / "Rock Bottom"

Go To

Arrgh!:

  • Fridge Brilliance: Why did no one else try to claim the treasure before when the map easily spelled out how to get it? Because it's the Flying Dutchman's treasure—no one would be dumb enough to risk incurring his wrath by trying to steal his booty (unless it happened to be a greedy miser like Krabs or his dimwitted employees).
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • This image of SpongeBob in his bed looking annoyed after Mr. Krabs wakes him up for the treasure hunt is a popular reaction image online. Another image from the same scene has also been used in several memes.
    • "Ooooh, east? I thought you said weast."

Rock Bottom:

  • Alternate Character Interpretation: It's obvious that the bus drivers are deliberately avoiding SpongeBob; consequently, some have theorized that the bus driver that SpongeBob drove crazy by (accidentally) repeatedly smacking him with his balloon reached out to the other bus drivers to tell them to deliberately leave SpongeBob behind.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: The red anglerfish is very popular despite his very brief appearances, since he's a Good Samaritan.
  • Epileptic Trees: Some fans have theorized that the red anglerfish is half-Bikini Bottomite, half-Rock Bottomite, as his design is more conventional than the rest of the Rock Bottomites, and he's perfectly capable of speaking in SpongeBob's accent when sending him back home.
  • Genius Bonus: Considering Bikini Bottom is based on Bikini Atoll, which is in the Pacific Ocean, it can be assumed Rock Bottom is in the Marianas Trench, the deepest part of any ocean on Earth.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • "I can't (raspberry) understand (raspberry) your accent. (raspberry)"Explanation
    • "This isn't your normal everyday darkness, this is... ADVANCED DARKNESS."Explanation
  • Nightmare Fuel: Most of the residents of Rock Bottom, all of whom are based on actual deep-sea creatures. The place itself is pretty freaky.
  • Special Effect Failure: At the end of the episode when SpongeBob floats back home to Bikini Bottom, his pineapple house is clearly poorly composited into the regular overhead shot of the city.
