YMMV / SpongeBob SquarePants: Squid's Visit / To SquarePants Or Not To SquarePants

Go To

  • Designated Hero: Assuming we’re supposed to view SpongeBob as the hero in this, his goal amounts to trying to force Squidward to visit him by stealing from him and renovating his entire home to be an exact copy of Squidward’s, which drives the poor octopus to the brink of insanity by the end. He does offer Squidward a place to stay after the latter’s home gets burned to the ground, but that does little to change the fact that SpongeBob in this episode not only comes across as an entitled and inconsiderate Manchild but also a disturbed Stalker without a Crush.
  • Nightmare Fuel: "Squid's Visit" has a somewhat creepy premise, with SpongeBob making his entire house look exactly like Squidward's down to every minor detail. But the real creepy parts are when SpongeBob is heavily breathing with a crazed look while staring at Squidward, and at the end when Squid's house burns down, he then gets a very weird looking expression, and then has a fantasy of him having tea with his vacuum and he then says "Yes, I'd love another spot of tea, Mr. Vacuum Cleaner!" and "care for some casserole?" in an eerie tone underscored by unsettling background music, and then he starts laughing insanely with his eye-twitching while the screen zooms in on his face.
  • Never Live It Down: Along with the likes of "Choir Boys" and "Boating Buddies", this is one episode that's often brought up by people who insist that SpongeBob is a Designated Hero who solely exists to make Squidward miserable and drive him to the brink.
  • Jerkass Woobie:
    • Squidward, because, as he comes out from SpongeBob's pineapple house, Squidward found his house vapourized, due to the fire. It was the casserole that was in the oven, and he screamed at SpongeBob for forcing him to stay so long in his house burned down. However, SpongeBob didn't feel guilty about the incident. Then SpongeBob urge Squidward into living at his house until Squidward's house gets rebuilt, this cause Squidward to go into a catatonic state. Suddenly goes into a state of delusion by imagining Squidward having tea with his vaccum, then he crazily laughs while holding the burnt casserole. Squidward began to get light-headed, then faints, causing SpongeBob to shout his name.
    • SpongeBob to a lesser extent. For all the trouble he ended up causing, he pretty much only meant it to be one of his usual attempts at getting Squidward to be his friend, sounded genuinely worried when he fainted, and seemed perfectly okay with sleeping out in the burnt remains (even if it's just meant as Rule of Funny).
  • What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?: SpongeBob really wants Squidward to come visit him, but of course Squidward wants nothing to do with him. So SpongeBob "borrows" Squidward's vacuum cleaner so he has no choice but to come visit, and he finds that SpongeBob has redesigned the inside of his house as an exact replica of Squidward's, down to the smallest details. Squidward is understandably freaked out by this, and spends so long looking for his vacuum cleaner that his own house burns down because he left his oven on. Then SpongeBob offers for Squidward to come live with him until his house gets rebuilt, which mentally destroys Squidward. This kind of plot would be perfect for a horror movie or The Twilight Zone, not a children's cartoon show. Though Squidward gets the last laugh in the end, when he forces SpongeBob to sleep in the burnt out wreckage.
