YMMV / SpongeBob SquarePants S 2 E 18 "Sailor Mouth" / "Artist Unknown"

Go To

Sailor Mouth:

  • Hilarious in Hindsight: At one point, Mr. Krabs says he ought to have SpongeBob and Patrick paint the inside of the Krusty Krab for using foul language. Fast-forward to Season 3 and we have "Wet Painters", where SpongeBob and Patrick goof around inside the Krusty Krab, and Mr Krabs gets them to paint the inside of his own house.
  • Ho Yay: Spongebob scribbling Squidward smells... GOOD has been interpreted by some fans as a sign that the protagonist is romantically attracted to his co-worker.
  • Memetic Mutation: An image of Fred at the Krusty Krab angrily looking at SpongeBob and Patrick for cussing has been used as a reaction image in several memes and message boards.
  • Misaimed Fandom: This episode gained controversy when it was accused of promoting foul language, despite the moral being that there's no use for such words. It probably didn't help that most of the children watching the episode when it first aired were just learning that those words existed.
  • Spiritual Successor: You could say that this was the closest we would ever get to seeing a proper broadcast of the infamous "Rude Removal" episode of Dexter's Laboratory.

Artist Unknown:

  • Accidental Innuendo: "If I'm lucky, Mr. Talent will rub his tentacles on my art."note
  • Alternate Aesop Interpretation:
    • Since both SpongeBob and Squidward's art gets dismissed in very boorish way (with some petty jealousy implied in the case of SpongeBob's art) it can also be a take on art's worth being subjective, and that you can not always base your art on other's approval unless you want to be sapped of your passion.
    • Squidward's art gets rejected because they're all self portraits. It really isn't due to not having any skills, it's due to him being too conceited and stuck-up to depict other things. Being an artist also means expanding your vision, which includes not being a narcissist.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Squidward's Bold and Brash painting. Despite being hated in-universe, a lot of fans have defictionalized the painting and hung it on their walls. The design has also been printed on posters, mugs, shirts, etc. It's also common for fans to redraw other characters in the same abstract style, and are usually jokingly told it "belongs in the trash".
    • "Dear Jesus, please smite my enemies."Explanation
