YMMV / Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage

Go To

  • Awesome Music:
  • Complete Monster: Cletus Kasady, aka Carnage, is the same malevolent maniac who opens the game slaughtering his way through groups of security guards to escape Ravencroft. Amassing a team of villains at his side, Carnage begins spreading a Hate Plague through New York that turns citizens violent and aggressive. Carnage kills anyone in his way as he kidnaps his "father" Venom and subjects him to brutal torture with fire and sound. Carnage plans to drive all of New York into violent insanity so the city will tear itself apart in honor of his villainy.
  • Goddamned Boss: Demogoblin and Carrion, since they can fly. The latter is manageable, but the former will give players a huge headache due to his strange gimmick; attempting to combo Demogoblin will cause him to trade punches with either Spider-Man or Venom until either of them goes down, which because of how he deals more damage than either of the two will ensure he gets the upper hand.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The Sega MegaDrive version of the game over theme. Unlike the SNES version which is a somber rock tune, the music for that version consists of a panicky blaring scores complete with an unsettling Scare Chord that repeats with every countdown. Better hope you don't run out of continues.
  • Special Effects Failure: Dagger has no animations for being hit, so the scene where Carnage attacks and seemingly kills her just looks awkward, as she just stands there, ducking once, while he flails around before it suddenly cuts to Cloak yelling, "Tandyyy!"
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: The Beat 'em Up game for the SNES and Genesis was advertised as featuring a soundtrack composed by Green Jelly (later Green Jello) - who came up with an original title tune and Suspiciously Similar Songs to metal classics for the rest of the game. Most notable as well as fitting was Black Sabbath's "The Mob Rules" for boss fights. Unsurprising considering the band is best known for its copyright infringement lawsuits from Metallica for using their riffs in their songs ("Electric Harley House of Love" went as far as lampshading it).
  • That One Boss: Muzzoid, a robot that takes lots of hits to start showing damage, has relatively few parts to be hit, depletes the player's HP pretty easily when he strikes, and to make the fight annoying along with difficult, is frequently jumping around, with one leaping attack that drops the player on the ground. Even with Tiger Drop, they'll be a pain in the ass to beat before you can start focusing on the actual boss.
  • That One Level: Prospect Park, which pits you against whole groups of Degraded Bosses, then those enemies upgraded back to Mini-Bosses, and then an entire group of gun-wielding new Mini-Bosses.
  • No Problem with Licensed Games: The game has good controls, good music, and is actually all-around one of the best Spider-Man games; especially the SNES version.note .
