YMMV / Sonny Boy

Go To

  • Awesome Art: The unique art style and surrealist tone lead to some stunning sequences, with special mention going to the sequences in episodes 11 and 12, depicting the crew recreating the Apollo 11 mission rocket to launch themselves up to the doorway between dimensions, and the absolutely jaw dropping wormhole visuals accompanying Nagara and Mizuho’s escape back to their own world.
  • Awesome Music:
    • The opening track "Shonen Shojo", heard here is a nostalgic track that brings to mind summer vacations. Same applies to the acoustic version heard in Episode 12.
    • "Sonny Boy Rhapsody", played by math rock band toe, which plays on episode 12 over Nagara and Mizuho running through surreal landscapes to return to their world, brings the sequence to a whole new level.
  • Broken Base:
    • Episode 4 is either one of the most interesting episodes, or one of the most boring. Special mention goes to Cap's long, long story about baseball-playing monkeys.
    • The ending, where Nagara and Mizuho leave the world where they are immortal and super-powered, and return to the real world. There, Nagara ends up in a soul-crushing menial job, Mizuho must give up her cats, and nobody except for them remembers being adrift in the other world — including Nozomi, who throughout the series was hinted as a love interest for Nagara, but in the real world is Asakaze's girlfriend and doesn't even know Nagara. Some fans found it an Esoteric Happy Ending, even to the point of claiming that Nagara and Mizuho should just have stayed forever in the other world. Others believe it's perfectly in tune with the series' theme of growing up and accepting that you can't have everything you dream of.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Rajdhani has his fair share of fans for being unwaveringly optimistic, friendly to everyone, and determined to discover the truth about the world they've been taken to.
    • Shanghai seems fairly popular for someone who's a tertiary character at best, perhaps due to the combination of her cute design and the exotic trait of speaking in a foreign language.
  • Fan Nickname: "Star Boy" for Hoshi, due to the tattoo on his face.
  • Memetic Mutation: It's a baseball league here in the world of Monkey Mountain... Explanation
  • Spoiled by the Format: Near the end of episode 4, Nagara tries to use his powers to bring the class back into their world. Seeing as the series isn't even halfway over yet, it's not surprising when he fails.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Many of the students from the initial episodes barely appear in the second half, if at all. Examples include Pony, Cap, and Shanghai, who as a consequence remain rather underdeveloped.
