YMMV / Somali and the Forest Spirit

Go To

  • Awesome Art: Almost all the scenes in the anime are beautifully coloured. The manga artwork is no slouch either, absolutely busting at the seams with exquisite detail on just about everything.
  • Awesome Music: Uncontrollable Power, a tragic and haunting track for when Mr. Golem is on the verge of losing himself in his quest to protect Somali.
  • Creepy Awesome: Golem's berserk state is something utterly terrifying to behold as he becomes something acing to a killing machine and it is heart-wrenching that Somali would have to witness all of it, yet one can't deny just how awesome the whole thing is.
  • Moe: Somali, oh so much.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Auntie Rosa firmly crosses it when she sell out Somali to be murdered and eaten. She knows Somali is just an innocent child and doesn't care, just because she's human.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Haitora's backstory in episode 6. Imagine, living a peaceful life with your family until monsters attack and make your friends and neighbors their slaves. Haitora and his family find shelter in a cave, but are constantly on guard and can't go out much lest they be caught by the monsters. Out of hunger and desperation, Haitora kills a nearby harpy so his family can eat. But the second they eat the dead harpy's flesh, his wife and daughter have feathers growing out of every part of their body, their eyes and mouths included, and he has to watch them scream in sheer agony and succumb to the Body Horror, completely helpless and unable to do anything except watch them die horribly. Later, while wallowing in his sorrow, a young Uzoi finds him in the cave while looking for her mother...said mother being the harpy he ate.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: The CGI Animation in the ED is absolutely stunning.
  • The Woobie:
    • Isolde's ancestor, Feodora, in episode 8. She was just a sweet kid who wanted to be friends with the humans in the village that saved her, but when she notices they don't take kindly to the monsters, she knows if they find out she's a witch, they'll hate her as well. When she saves a little girl, Miya, from falling to her death, the townspeople tell her to leave and call her a monster, and when she leaves, she's in tears.
    • Somali has her moments too.
  • Woobie Species: Humanity. They're on the verge of extinction, hunted by non-humans who see them as nothing but food. The flashback in episode 6 has a village wiped out by "Grotesques" who enslaved anyone they didn't kill and eat. Humanity's prospects as a species in this world are grim.
