  • Harsher in Hindsight: The Mark McGwire Book Ends with him passing Maris in 1998, since Big Mac has admitted to using performance-enhancing drugs in his career; Sammy Sosa (who also surpassed Maris's 61 that year) and current record-holder Barry Bonds also have evidence against them that they used PEDs as well, though neither has admitted to it. Incidentally, the first player to be seen as clean to pass Maris's American League record of 61 is a fellow Yankee, Aaron Judge, who hit 62 in 2022.
  • Padding: One of the few criticisms of an otherwise highly regarded film is that the film is a bit on the long side and could've used some trims, notably a few less scenes of Maris vs. the press after the point had been made, a fabricated scene of an angry fan trying to assault Maris (which didn't happen and doesn't advance the plot), and an especially Narm-y scene of a contemplative Maris holed up in his hotel room while a Lyle Lovett song on the soundtrack heavily underlines Maris's feelings that had already been hammered home by that point. To put this in perspective, Maris & Mantle are already at 40 home runs apiece about twenty minutes into the movie and it still has nearly two hours left to go.
