YMMV / Sid Vicious

Go To

  • Condemned by History: During the eighties he was frequently touted as a musical genius and worshipped by teenage rebels whereas now he's viewed much more critically. It's notable that Sid's only real lyrical contribution was "Belsen Was A Gas", which the rest of the band thought was in bad taste even at the time. Modern punk scenes actively avoid Nazi references due to decades of clashes with Neo-Nazis, only making the song's (and by extension, Sid's) reputation fall further. Sid's lack of skill as a bassist is now far more well-known than in previous decades, making him more likely to be the butt of Dreadful Musician jokes than viewed as a punk idol.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: It's hard to talk about Vicious without mentioning his many legal issues, unruly behavior, and severe drug dependency.
  • Posthumous Popularity Potential: After his death Sid Vicious became a punk legend and an icon of teen rebels in the '80s and '90s. He is considered more true to the spirit of the genre because he could never grow old and turn into a superstar who betrayed his ideals.
