YMMV / Seinfeld S9 E23 "The Finale"

Go To

  • Accidental Aesop:
    • "Don't be an asshole on the way up to the people whose help you'll need on the way down." While the logic of the trial clearly exists more for entertainment rather than realism, the four main characters' selfishness still earned them a lot of enemies over the course of the show, to the point that they have more acquaintances who hate them than like them. Even if a lot of those enemies were earned despite the four's best efforts, they still weren't very nice to most people, which isn't a good look for anybody, even in a trial that's not playing by the rules of reality, and might have fared better had they been generally kinder.
    • "The company of friends can make even prison bearable."
  • Informed Wrongness: A lot of the witnesses' anger comes off as this, such as that over the "Sponge" topic. While Elaine buying up the store's supplies was selfish, it was a discontinued item and plenty of people have been known to buy in bulk when they know a product is going off the shelves.
  • Strawman Has a Point: Jackie Chiles may be an over-the-top caricature of Johnnie Cochran, but he is 100% correct that the trial is a sham and a waste of taxpayers' time and money, as LegalEagle demonstrates.
  • Unintentional Period Piece: Cell phones were still relatively new at the time, or at least their proliferation had yet to occur. These days the Serious Business portrayal of etiquette regarding when to use them seems pretty odd.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: The four may have deserved some kind of comeuppance, but the way they were presented in court made them look worse than they really are, and some of these witnesses weren't very sympathetic either (such as the Bubble Boy).
  • Values Resonance: Rivera Live covering the trial. It was prescient not only on mediatic cable news hosts covering mediatic trials gavel-to-gavel, but also on fictional shows featuring parodic versions of said hosts "covering" In-Universe mediatic trials also gavel-to-gavel.
