YMMV / Samon the Summoner

• Alternative Character Interpretation: Samon will gleefully admit that he is a selfish person who makes others miserable for his own amusement, but he also has the occasional Jerk with a Heart of Gold moment that can call this into question. It's also notable that most of his dastardly deeds often end up benefiting other people afterwards, though often as an aftereffect.
  • Does he antagonize Tesshigawara purely because she is "too good", or because he wants her to be more honest with her desires? There's certainly evidence for the latter, once Teshigawara figures out from Samon's own mother that he ran off and tried to do his own thing because he thought his parents were too self-sacrificing.
• Angel/Devil Shipping: Samon and Teshigawara. It's pretty obvious which is the devil and which is the angel.
• Ensemble Dark Horse: Teshigawara's little sister, Teshigawara Rin, despite having relaively few appearances was able to come in fifth in the popularity poll.
• Memetic Mutation: It's a common joke to say that Numa had made a Deal with the Devil to keep his series afloat in Jump, given that Samon was always near the bottom of the rankings but was kept afloat by the revolving lineup of new series. Even more jokes are made about the demon in question being his editor.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Makes it worse with the series' cancellation. All of those "sacrifices" and the manga itself was next on the chopping block.
• Mind Game Ship: Samon's desire to corrupt Teshigawara into greed can come across as this to some.
• Spiritual Predecessor: No pun intended, but the 2019 Weekly Jump series Mitama Security: Spirit Busters has seen a lot of comparisons to Samon, due to both being gag based, both dealing with the supernatural, the male leads being blue haired exorcists with an unusually spiky hairstyle, and their dynamics with the female leads being similar.
• Unpopular Popular Character: Kuzuryuu Kai. In-series he's The Friend Nobody Likes to just about everyone except Samon, and is constantly called trash or just ignored by people. In the popularity poll however, he came in third place!
