YMMV / Salty's Lighthouse

Go To

  • Broken Base: The quality of the show, specifically the TUGS segments. While it’s almost universally agreed that TUGS is superior, most are split on whether or not the TUGS segments are good in their own right. They’re either good, or at the very least harmless, or a complete and utter butchery of a good show.
  • Critical Dissonance: According to some sources, professional critics (as in TV critics for magazines) liked the show, but most TUGS fans and online critics hated it for "butchering" TUGS.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: It didn't do well in the United States because it aired on TLC's low-rated preschool block Ready, Set, Learn!, and was hated in other countries because it was seen as an inferior version of TUGS, the show which it adapts. But in Jamaica, it was one of the highest-rated programs on CVM Television, running longer than it did in the United States.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Most people just watch the show for the TUGS segments and not the stuff that happens in the lighthouse.
  • Macekre: The TUGS segments mishmash several unrelated scenes together, so one scene could be at sunset, and the very next could be at day. They were also prone to reusing footage from "Regatta" and "Trapped" the most. TUGS isn't really suited for a preschool audience, so they also had to Bowdlerise it a lot, which many felt robbed the show of what made it so great in the first place.
  • Retroactive Recognition: The voice of the titular Salty, Rhys Huber, would later go on to voice Syaoran Li on Cardcaptor Sakura, which also had a divisive North American localization.
  • So Okay, It's Average: The TUGS segments are the main reason people remember what is otherwise a standard run-of-the-mill preschooler show.
  • Special Effects Failure: The editing for the TUGS segments is rather spotty, with the time of day and the placement of characters relative to one another switching between shots in what is meant to be the same scene. While this is understandable since the original show only gave so much to work with, what is less understandable is the roundabout way the segments handled the characters dancing; the footage is reversed and replayed, with the current of the water and direction of any smoke present changing with it.
