YMMV / Saikano

  • Anvilicious: The anti-war message is this, but Some Anvils Need to Be Dropped.
  • Darkness-Induced Audience Apathy: More than one person who has seen/read it has gotten... bored with all the darkness and melodrama.
  • Everyone Is Jesus in Purgatory: The show lends itself to Christian interpretations.
  • Mainstream Obscurity: Not many ever get around to watching it.
  • Memetic Mutation: The manga's reputation as the saddest thing ever made.
  • Narm:
    • Many scenes where Chise cries, but the sex scene between her (or better said, a re-built/re-born one) and Shuuji tops it all.
    • The reveal of what happened to the kittens comes off a little too Yank the Dog's Chain.
    • The character designs make it that instead of two high school students falling it love, it seems like a middle school student and her teacher.
  • Nightmare Fuel: See: And I Must Scream. Also a massive Tear Jerker.
  • Snark Bait: The character designs having Chise look preteen and Shuuji look in his 40s make some people unable to take this show seriously, especially in the romantic moments where it makes Shuuji look more like a perverted teacher who's responding to a student's crush.
  • So Bad, It's Good: Due to the character designs, Anvilicious nature and heavy melodrama. It can make the tragedy impossible to take seriously.
  • Squick: The character designs are just one aspect of this.
