• Awesome Moments: Pikachu's victory against Raichu, hands down. While there's an argument to be made over the Boulder and Cascade Badges being "Pity Badges", Ash's fans and detractors alike agree that he and Pikachu earned their win since they properly outsmarted and defeated Surge and Raichu in a straight fight.
• Love to Hate: Surge and Raichu are fun to root against not only because of their boorish attitudes, but because they're legitimately tough, competent battlers that make Ash and Pikachu earn their win, leading to what's considered to be a universally satisfying victory compared to the way Ash won his previous badges.
• Values Dissonance:
  • When Ash and Misty's argument in the Pokemon Center gets so heated, Ash thrusts his fist forward to deck Misty in the face. Notably, this is the only instance of such a thing ocurring.
  • When Ash and his friends first arrive at the gym, it almost seems like Surge is hitting on Misty… keep in mind Surge is an ADULT who looks to be at least in his 30s while Misty is only 10…
