YMMV / Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of the Spirit

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: In-Universe the partner has a hard time telling What the newly formed Darkrai's intentions were the dimensional hole.
    • Darkrai and Cresselia, in the flashback, both accuse eachother of "changing", but what this means isn't entirely clear.
  • Catharsis Factor: The first real divergence from the story will likely resonate with a lot of players of the original game: outing Team Skull to Chatot and getting them booted from the expedition. Granted you still go without dinner but holy cow was it satisfying.
  • Crowning Moment of Awesome: Rather then meekly standing off to the side while the partner is demoralized by Team Skull...
Hero: BACK OFF.
  • Fridge Brilliance: Overlaps with Fridge Horror. Giving Xatu a role in Darkrai's backstory is sensible, but also when you remember how very easily riled up the Pokemon Square residents can get...
  • Tear Jerker:
    • The hero tearfully admitting that they feel out of control to the partner and they don’t feel like they can trust anyone
    • Darkrai’s fall. He was once friends with Cresselia. One day Cresselia, concerned about Darkrai’s excessive punishing of criminals, brings Darkrai to Xatu to read his future. Darkrai is skeptical about both Xatu and Cresselia’s intentions, but Cresselia insists that she is doing this because she cares about him. This is revealed to be a bald faced lie when the instant Xatu agrees with her that Darkrai isn’t going down a good path, she tries to stuff Darkrai in a keystone, chasing him and calling him names. She broke his trust by lying about her intentions, immediately turning on him without trying to reason with Darkrai or seeing with it.
    • Grovyle's subplot involves him going back in time to see his two friends one last time, in particular, his human partner. Unfortunately, all the time travel involve in saving the world has now permanently severed the original timeline from Grovyle's future: he will never see his friend again, since all the time travel in the world won't do much good if the person he wants to see is in a parallel timeline.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: Darkrai. Many fans found themselves sympathizing with Darkrai’s turn after being immediately betrayed by his only friend, Cresselia, and signified it as the exact thing that leads to Darkrai plotting the Planet’s Paralysis.
  • The Un-Twist: No, you are NOT playing as an ex-human who traveled back in time to help Grovyle save the world from the planet's paralysis. Who you really are is, however, a previously seen character...
