  • Alternative Character Interpretation: The player's choices for Andreas's backgrounds, hobbies, and dialogue can result in a pious nerd, a sarcastic troublemaker, and everything in between.
  • Aluminum Christmas Trees: Brother Sebhat's presence might seem like simply an attempt to diversify an otherwise very white game, however during this era there really were Ethiopians on diplomatic missions in Europe.
  • Catharsis Factor: Lenhardt Müller is a bastard who basically revels at the suffering of the peasants, abuses his wife and son, and regularly cheats on Else, and nearly kills Andreas' for no reason other than power play. Being burned alive in his windmill is a joyous occasion.
  • Genius Bonus: Brother Sebhat was a nod to the Ethiopian delegation who came to the Council of Constance in 1414. This is emphasized by Sebhat's reason in Kiersau being returning gifts to the abbey during such occasion.
  • Narm: Learning that Martin Bauer is an impostor, and has been living a lie in Tassing for years? Dramatic and shocking twist. An achievement named Among Us and showing a cartoony knife directly after this twist? Jarring and more than a little funny.
  • Memetic Mutation: "God bless you, Andreas Maler." and its variations are frequently quoted by fans. It's just an era-appropriate farewell, but it's said at the end of nearly every interaction in the game.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • The mural that Andreas paints over the Danse Macabre in the ruins of the abbey during Act III. It's clear that the guilt and grief he feels over the deaths in Acts I and II have led to severe Sanity Slippage.
    • The execution scene if you accuse Prior Ferenc of the baron's murder. He's probably the least sympathetic of the potential suspects because he's a jerk to you and the brothers in the scriptorium, but the game is not going to let you feel good about sending him to his death.
  • Player Punch:
    • After saving Brother Piero from being wrongfully executed, Andreas and the old monk share a few parting words, and Andreas promises to come back soon in order to speak with him again. The scene immediately cuts to Brother Piero's headstone.
    • Claus Drucker affirms his friendship with Andreas multiple times throughout Act I, and is eager to see him again regardless of the outcome of the trial. When Andreas comes back in Act II, Claus reveals that he hasn't received a letter from Andreas in years, in spite of telling him about the death of his wife and child.
    • Toward the end of Act 2, Andreas sends Caspar away before things get too dangerous in Tassing. A whole act later, if you were nice to Caspar, you can learn that Caspar didn't actually leave and died after saving Andreas from the burning library. The only way to save him is to treat him poorly.
    Andreas : He didn't leave.
    • In Act II, Andreas can encourage Ursula to listen to her grandfather and connect with Tassing's pagan roots. If he succeeds, then she will eagerly put together and recount all the tales Ill Peter and Otillia Kemperyn (if she's alive) tell her, and she seems to be truly happy and fulfilled to have a connection to her past. This knowledge may also lead to her being burned as a witch.
    • Everything surrounding Sister Matilda's investigation and execution, if found guilty of Rothvogel's murder in act 1. Matilda is clearly reliving the trauma Rothvogel put her through with an implacable fate awaiting her, does not try to run away or curse at the crowd, commends herself to the Lord, and tries to fight back by clumsily punching the executioner as he strangles her. Again, very much like when she fought back against Rothvogel. That the crowd is also yelling that it's wrong just makes it all the harder to see.
