Rodney later tells him how stupid that suggestion is, but Del admits that he knows perfectly well that it won't achieve anything, beyond giving said friend some small amount of hope. Today, with frivolous prescriptions for antibiotics having given rise to extremely deadly drug-resistant forms of bacteria, the scene takes on a somewhat darker feel.
