YMMV / 1: Life on the Limit

Go To

  • Harsher in Hindsight: Robert Kubica's crash in the 2007 Canadian Grand Prix is shown briefly towards the end. The crash caused him to miss just one race. He suffered a Rally crash in 2011 that partially severed his right arm and broke his right leg (which he broke again a year later), halting his F1 career until 2017 when he tested for the Renault team, eventually returning to a race seat with Williams in 2019.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • The movie's main narrator Michael Fassbender started dabbling with motor racing in 2017 and notably contested the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2022 and 2023.
    • Five time World Champion Juan Manuel Fangio is quoted as having been surpassed by only Michael Schumacher with 7 titles early on in the movie. Lewis Hamilton (who only had one title to his name at the time of the movie's release) has since gone on to surpass Fangio and equal Schumacher's record.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Some of the crashes covered in the movie are more gruesome than others, the most notable being the fatal crash of Roger Williamson in the 1973 Dutch Grand Prix.
  • Tear Jerker: This is inevitable, considering the number of fatal crashes that are covered in the movie.
  • Unintentional Period Piece:
    • The film was released in 2013, at the time, Ayrton Senna was F1's most recent fatality. The following year, Jules Bianchi crashed into a crane at high speed during the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix and died from his injuries in July 2015.
    • One of the (then-present day) interviewees, Professor Sid Watkins, passed away in 2012, the movie was released the following year. Most of the interviews were conducted in 2010 and 2011.
    • Since the movie's release, the following (then-present day) interviewees have passed away, Bette Hill (wife of Graham and mother of Damon) and 1964 World Champion John Surtees in 2017, John Miles in 2018, 3 time World Champion Niki Lauda in 2019 and former FIA President Max Mosley in 2021.
