- Americans Hate Tingle: While this movie is held as a classic in Brazil, it was much less well-received in Olga's home country Germany, whose critics found the movie over-dramatic and focusing on the romantic aspect.
- Nightmare Fuel: Olga's ordeal: being sent to a Nazi death camp while pregnant. Also the last shot of the movie shows her looking completely despondent at the camera while inside a gas chamber.
- Romantic Plot Tumor: The love story between Olga Benário and Luiz Carlos Prestes has been criticized as the least interesting aspect about the movie, at least according to the German critics.
