  • Complete Monster: The nameless creature is a demonic entity that actively hunted mankind since the 17th century. Dwelling within the spring that provides water for the family pool, it has made deals with countless humans desperate to heal their sick at the cost of the sacrifice of a loved one. In 1992, it lures and drowns Rebecca Fuller, trapping her soul in another dimension alongside the hostile spirits of its previous victims. When the Waller family moves into the Fullers' former residence, the creature kills the family cat and targets Elliot as its next victim. After "healing" Ray, it takes full possession of him, compelling him to nearly drown a boy during a neighborhood pool party, and attempts to violently kill his daughter Izzy, all while sadistically delighting in its cruelty.
  • Fridge Horror: What really happens to the pool's victims is never shown; all the audience knows is that they get dragged inside.
  • Narm: The entire premise of the film is narm as hell. Haunted houses are a staple in horror movie culture, but a pool? It's as silly as haunted houses in which the family can leave, but chooses not to instead. There are several points before the climax when things escalate that the family could have saved itself a lot of pain and suffering, but the movie can't happen unless they continue using the pool, so they do. And even after all the spooky shit, they allow a pool party to happen and a kid almost dies as a result. Australian viewers are not going to miss the repeated references to Harold Holt, the prime minister who went missing while swimming at a beach, and had a swimming pool named after himself.
  • Padding: Given that the original short film was three minutes long, the movie has to invent all sorts of things to pad it out to feature length.
  • Paranoia Fuel: Word of God claims that the film was intended to "ruin the swimming pool forever". Maybe it would be a good idea to start being careful when stepping into a swimming pool…
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: The children have reported being attacked by something in the water and the cat went missing. The logical thing to do is cover up the pool and not use it until they can figure things out. Do they do that? Nah. They throw a pool party and almost get an innocent kid killed. Our heroes, ladies and gentlemen. The father has already been possessed, so we can rule him out, but his wife should have never allowed it and should have cleared out the guests regardless of how it would look to their friends or family.
