** Bird Boy is probably the most extreme, being an imbecilic half-animal who derailed the book into whacky antics and over-eating. He's actually one of the most-accurate in-continuity versions of the Jackovasaurs from ''WesternAnimation/SouthPark''. At least he was rapidly PutOnABus.

Not the trope. Hollywood Homely is when the audience is meant to consider a character unattractive, despite them being attractive or average-looking by most people's standards. As this entry notes: the Morlocks see Skids as hideous because she looks different from them; the audience was never meant to consider her unattractive.

* HollywoodHomely: Skids was considered "ugly" by the morlocks. This, of course, is because the Morlocks are all hideous and consider her a freak among freaks.

Rictor. They were supposed to be depicted as best friends, but their relationship seemed too intimate for that. A couple of decades later, they canonically became one of Marvel's most prominent gay couples.
**
Illyana towards Kitty.Kitty. Kitty disliked most of the New Mutants, and Illyana was often the team's token evil member. But they clearly loved each other, they often shared living quarters, and could relate to each other in ways they could not with most of the other mutants. Several fans view the depiction as closer to them being soulmates than roommates.

* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: The transition from New Mutants to X-Force. And later The team lost several of its key members (such as Magik, Moonstar, and Wolfsbane), it replaced them with morally questionable or (in Feral's case) sociopathic members, and they started being promoted as an ultra-violent and militaristic alternative to the de-Simonson/Liefeldization X-Men. On the villain front, the relatively likeable and reasonably sane Hellions were replaced with the ultra-violent and unhinged members of the franchise under Zeb Wells.Mutant Liberation Front. Given these changes, several fans of the New Mutants hated X-Force with a passion.

%%** If there's one constant with ** Karma it's that life seems to find was originally depicted as a way war orphan from UsefulNotes/TheVietnamWar. She witnessed the rape and murder of crapping all over her mother, she was also raped, and she was left to both fend for herself and to play surrogate mother for two younger siblings. She was forced to kill her specifically.
evil brother and was traumatised by the act, and for years her archenemy was an EvilUncle who wanted to control her. She had her body hijacked and corrupted by the Shadow King for an extended period. She had several stories with her siblings kept hostage by various villains. She had a long period of estrangement from her best friends. When she came out as a lesbian, her love interests were oblivious to her feelings. When she re-joined the X-Men associates, she had a leg permanently severed and she was given an awkward-looking prosthetic. Basically, most of her stories depict her suffering one trauma after another. She rarely experiences any moments of calm or joy.

%%* * TheWoobie: Rahne. A couple An orphan raised by a religious fanatic adoptive father. She was taught to hate herself and her mutation as satanic, her inherited prejudices caused friction with her teammates. Her subsequent stories involve several periods from separation from both her best friend and her main love interest, a period as a brainwashed slave, surviving the assassination of her old teammates have had worse backstories, but few radiate ''please hug me'' as much as adoptive mother, exeriencing a scandal that ended her teaching career because she when they are down over it.fell in love with a student, having uncontrolable violent urges, surviving the murder of her only son, and being effectively told that Krakoa's resurrection spells may not work on him at all. Basically 40 years of one tragic story after another. Writers seem to delight on making her life worse.

** Cypher too, but his death was an AlasPoorScrappy moment and since his return, he's been RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap.
*** It should be mentioned that only a few ''very'' vocal fans actually hated the kid, as most found him inoffensive yet likeable enough that they really didn't care that he couldn't do much in a fight without Warlock, which is why his death brought with it an outpouring of upset fans.

Cutting Word Cruft. Fixing indentations. The last example is written in a manner that suggests it's a shoehorn ("Arguably").

* MoralEventHorizon: Pierce crosses this several times in the New Mutants origin story alone. Examples are ordering the death of Dani's grandfather and having his men trying to kill each of the New Mutants who were, at the time, teenagers who had only just discovered their powers.
** The Ani-Mator also crossed this by killing Cypher.
** Empath, when he used his powers to take advantage of various people, whether personally or by proxy, in the original Claremont books.
*** And in this connection, arguably Roulette, as well, who wasn't horrified, but rather ''[[LackOfEmpathy amused]]'', when he used those powers on [[IncorruptiblePurePureness Firestar]].

Neither example has much context, and a trope called Moment of Awesome cannot be used to describe an entire series, or be used to gush over the writer.

* SugarWiki/MomentOfAwesome: '''ComicBook/TheDemonBearSaga''', for both Danielle Moonstar and the creative team themselves.
** The Magus is probably among the most powerful foes any X-team has ''ever'' faced, and the New Mutants squad, the Professor, and a cosmically-powered Carol Danvers ended up stopping him. And ''Doug Ramsey'' was the guy who won the battle.

Hiding ZCEs and deleting misuse: If there is clear subtext, it's not this trope. The example about Warlock looks like a shoehorn, since it argues that the character doesn't have a gender to begin with.
