YMMV / My Super Best Friend

Go To

  • Accidental Aesop: Whether or not the author made it an intentional Aesop, many people who read this story seems acknowledge that they should not let their mistakes define them as they are capable of moving past them and becoming better people.
  • Alternate Character Interpretation: It’s possible that Heidi may have romantic feelings for Kyle. While her determination to earn his forgiveness may be simply motivated by a desire to make up for her actions, the fact that she comments on his beauty, hesitates when he asks her if she merely wishes to tell him that she's sorry, laments that she will never be as close to him as Nichole is and outright tenses up when Bebe theorises that Kyle and Nichole may be dating, does lead credence to the idea that she may desire to be more than friends with him.
  • Catharsis Factor:
    • Let's face it, after watching Cartman constantly torment Kyle in the main show and get away with it, Kyle giving Cartman one of the most horrific beatdowns ever here is incredibly satisfying to read.
    • To a lesser extent, some may find it a bit satisfying when Butters’ attempt to stop Kyle’s beatdown of Cartman, leads to Kyle punching him, given that it was mainly due to Butters’ manipulations that the beatdown ended up happening in the first place. Doubly so for those who still hold him in contempt for his actions in Season 20.
    • Though these instances are drowned out by the direness of the situation present whenever they take place, it is rather satisfying whenever Kyle finally snaps at the rest of the kids and gives them a "Reason You Suck" Speech. The fact that each instance ends up leading to a Jerkass Realization on the kids’ parts, instead of only causing more drama, only makes things better.
    • It is also very satisfying to finally have Stan and Kyle call Wendy out for her terrible treatment of Heidi and how it led to her returning to Cartman and becoming his Distaff Counterpart, causing Wendy to have a Jerkass Realization and make amends with Heidi.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • Stan's fractured relationship with Kyle portrayed here would become this, when their friendship really becomes strained in the main show's episode, "South ParQ Vaccination Special", to the point where they stop being friends which carries on in one of the author's next fan fic, Divided We Fall.
    • While Cartman being the only one not to receive a happy ending is treated as Laser-Guided Karma, it becomes much harder to read upon knowing that in South Park: Post Covid: The Return of Covid he ends up being the only one amongst his peers to become miserable upon sacrificing his happy ending to save the future.
  • Heartwarming in Hindsight: The ending indicates that Kyle and Heidi might be able to become friends again. The author’s next two South Park fan fics shows that they more or less become friends with Phone Destroyer: Into the Digital World showing Heidi and Kyle working together to defeat Eric Cartman while being being friendly to each other and Heidi joining Kyle's faction in Divided We Fall.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • Kyle bonding with Nichole is very nice to see, especially since Kyle doesn't have to deal with his problems alone and Nichole does her best to help Kyle without ever judging him. The fact that the two remain close friends even when its implied Nichole got back together with Token in the end is especially sweet.
    • Also Kyle hugging his mom and saying that he doesn't resent her for her past actions, is especially sweet.
    • Heidi's You Are Better Than You Think You Are speech to Kyle after he was just saved by Stan is really nice since not only does it show how much Heidi has grown after her break up with Cartman, but also how much she wants to make amends with Kyle. It's strongly implied that this speech is what allows Kyle to forgive Heidi and when he sees Heidi laughing and chatting with her friends, Kyle is happy to see that Heidi was able to move on with her life.
    • Also, the girls visiting Heidi in the hospital and apologizing to her for their previous behavior to which Heidi forgives them for and asks them to be nicer to the boys to which they reply to her request. It ties into the above scene where Heidi is happily hanging out with them.
    • The ending is this in general. Stan is able to fully reconcile with Kyle, the girls are slowly making up with the boys, and Kyle was able to help Canada recover thus redeeming himself for his past actions against the country, and the last scene has him embracing Stan, Nichole, Ike and the boys barring Cartman in a group hug declaring them all to be his "super best friends".
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • Kyle's dream in chapter 19 where Kyle's subconscious tells him that the only way that Kyle will finally be free of the pain he is experiencing is if he kills his friends, showing that Kyle is starting to develop some truly dark thoughts that Kyle himself finds disturbing.
    • The scene in chapter 21 where a ferocious dog attacks Heidi, Nichole, and Kyle. The dog would have likely viciously killed the three had Uncle Jimbo not came and shot the dog.
    • Then there's the fight between Cartman and Kyle where Cartman comes and attacks Kyle. Kyle retaliates by giving Cartman a truly horrific No-Holds-Barred Beatdown before giving into his aforementioned dark thoughts and strangling him, only to be stopped by Heidi. This only leads to him proceeding to attack Heidi, blinded by his memories of her mistreatment of him during her time as Cartman’s Distaff Counterpart, only stopping when he realises, to his horror, what he has done.
  • Tearjerker:
    • Kyle breaking down while discussing the extent of his problems with Nichole, with Nichole attempting to comfort him.
    • Kyle in general produces a lot of these moments, especially in the first few chapters of the story, with him being wracked with guilt for accidentally convincing the President to nuke Canada, and being unable to confine in his friends about how he is feeling.
    • Kyle finding out that Stan and Heidi tried to sabotage his friendship with Nichole, nearly getting her killed in the process, which only damages his friendship with Stan, further damages his opinion of Heidi and leads to him once again isolating himself from everyone.
    • Kyle breaking down in front of Heidi, revealing why he is unable to forgive her and just how badly her past actions negatively impacted him, to her horror. Then Cartman shows up and begins wailing on a disoriented Kyle, which leads to something else entirely...
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Ike is frequently brought up as one of Kyle's main motivations for wanting to atone for his actions. Despite this, the siblings never interact with each other at any point in the story, and by the final chapter Ike appears to have made up with Kyle off-screen. It admittedly would have been nice to see how Ike felt about Kyle's attempts to repair the damage he indirectly caused, and definitely cathartic to see the two reconcile.
  • The Woobie:
    • Kyle is definitely portrayed as this. He feels immense guilt for indirectly causing Canada to get nuked and has completely shut himself off from everyone. He does get his happy ending, but he goes through a lot of hardships throughout the story to achieve it.
    • Stan is also up there with Kyle, though he may arguably qualify as a Jerkass Woobie for the majority of the story. Stan shows great remorse for not supporting Kyle when he needed it which led to Kyle cutting off ties with him. Stan is trying to repair his friendship with Kyle only to be pushed aside in favor of Nichole, which causes Stan to grow frustrated and insecure about his friendship with Kyle. This leads to Stan trying to sabotage Kyle and Nichole's bond, only to drive himself further away from Kyle, and destroying a large amount of progress that Kyle had made in his mental recovery. Though like Kyle, Stan does get his happy ending and ends the story having reconciled his friendship with his super best friend.
    • Heidi Turner is also this here. Granted her life has slightly improved after breaking up with Cartman as she's no longer in an dysfunctional relationship with him, lost most of the fat she previously gained, and is back to being a Nice Girl, but now she faces a new set of problems. This includes harboring immense guilt for how she previously treated Kyle resulting in him resenting her and any time she tries to make amends with Kyle it ends up backfiring causing Kyle to hate her more. There also the fact that Cartman constantly harasses her, unwilling to accept that Heidi wants nothing to do with him. Her desperation causes her to put Nichole in danger in an attempt to gain Kyle’s forgiveness, something she quickly regrets. Shortly after realising just how badly her actions truly hurt Kyle, she ends up getting hurt by him, while he is in the middle of an uncontrollable rage, after she tries to stop him from killing her ex-boyfriend. Of course, Heidi's Character Development from Season 21 has made her an Iron Woobie as she's no longer feeling sorry for herself and only wanting Kyle to forgive her which he does in the end and is last seen happily chatting and laughing with her friends.
