• Base-Breaking Character: Trenderhoof's bland characterization. They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character who should have been portrayed more extreme at the risk of being a scrappy caricature, or is that an Intended Audience Reaction because he was supposed to be uninteresting?
• Broken Base: This episode, for focusing on romance. Some don't like it because they feel it violates Lauren Faust's stated intention of the show being No Hugging, No Kissing^note which was never true; Rarity was interested in romance right from the start. Others don't mind since it illustrates the general "Be Yourself" moral well. Still others consider it a non-issue due to Rule of Funny, and the fact that he doesn't end up with either of them anyway.
• Fan Nickname: "Applejewel" and "Rarihick" originated from this episode.
• Unpopular Popular Character: Trenderhoof describes fan-favorite Memetic Bystander Derpy as "unappreciated" in-universe. This could be a meta-joke, seeing as this was one of Derpy's first cameos after Derpygate (where the Pegasus's sequence in "The Last Roundup" was retroactively censored due to complaints) led to her not appearing at all in Season 3 aside from the finale. It can be seen as a mild Take That! against the Executive Meddlers, since several of the DHX staff are known to like her.
