YMMV / My Hero Abridged

Go To

  • Abandon Shipping: Many fans of IzuOcha (and to a lesser extent, Kacchako) immediately jumped ship when it was revealed Uraraka instigated the incident that caused Midoriya's cancer by lying to Bakugo and telling him Midoriya bullied her, which she did out of jealousy over the boys' relationship. Uraraka revealed this while spitting on Midoriya's death, which also caused the fans to abandon ship. When Uraraka showed signs of attraction towards Deku later in the series, many fans refused to ship them together and hope they never become a couple. This could make Uraraka's realization that she loves the idea of Bakugo and Midoriya and not the boys themselves an Author's Saving Throw.
  • Broken Base: The series' complete infidelity to the original story, and to the characters thereof. It's either a Darker and Edgier retelling that represents a refreshing and interesting direction to take an abridged series in general, and My Hero Academia in particular, and the characters taken in interesting new directions as an outgrowth of that, or it's a slipshod fumble, caught halfway between trying to be an overwrought Dark Fic and its own edgy and juvenile sense of humor that makes it too ridiculous to take seriously but too grimdark to be pure comedy, with characters the creators are transparently playing favorites with.
  • Catharsis Factor: Even when you get used to Class 1-A's characters and vices in this timeline, and while they do get better, the Mirio fight can still surprisingly end up being this for some, as it's one of the rare instances where all of them get knocked down a few pegs.
  • Ho Yay:
    • Bakugo and Midoriya's relationship is rife with this, especially with Bakugo giving Midoriya cancer being his number one regret.
      • In episode four, Bakugo stands up to All Might, after he's been informed of how All Might has been treating Midoriya. He vows to scrub All Might from history as he walks off into the sunset while Midoriya smiles at him; glad that Bakugo has his back.
      • When confronted with the idea that him and Uraraka dated, Bakugo first reacts with confusion and eventually rage after Uraraka keeps pushing the issue (and revealing more about the incident that gave Midoriya cancer). He outright says "I never loved you, I loved him!", which does not go unnoticed by the audience both In-Universe and out.
      • In season three, after Mikey punches Midoriya in the groin, Bakugo reacts with a smile and remarks "lucky man". Bakugo tries to cover it up but as Todoroki points out, how else are we meant to interpret that?
      • By the end of The Movie, they effectively decide to be each other's reason for living, with Bakugo making sure he's more powerful than Midoriya so that Midoriya has to catch up to him, therefore not giving up on life as has been his attitude from the start of the series. Midoriya agrees but only if Bakugo is there with him.
    • Midoriya and All Might also gets this as well.
      • Midoriya eats All Might's pubes to gain One For All.
      • At the end of The Movie All Might breaks out of the hospital, just to see Midoriya and dies in his arms.
  • Les Yay: Froggy makes frequent passes at Uraraka and the other girls.
  • Moral Event Horizon:
    • Stain attacks and kills Ingenium just because he was a Hero.
    • Muscular still attacks and tries to murder a defenseless child for no real reason.
    • Hands still does his USJ attack like in canon and shows absolutely no remorse at killing Midoriya.
  • Nightmare Fuel: All For One's absolutely chilling speech in episode 16, given through Stain's corpse. It starts off tearing into and threatening the heroes before abruptly segueing to threaten the viewers in one of the most threatening Breaking the Fourth Wall segments ever. And it's not (just) threats of violence, but mockery for how one would watch the series expecting it to be little more than another trite regurgitation of the same story again, leaving themselves vulnerable to being hurt when the characters aren't what they expect. The whole speech is cut through with static, ominous music, and Voice of the Legion, layered over such wonderful visuals as the protagonist's dead bodies and live action worms squirming in the dirt, but even worse is when there's none of that, when the music abruptly cuts out, the screen goes dark, and All For One goes from sounding like a demon to just a man.
  • Squick: The series does not shy away from disgusting humor, just because it's a more serious take on My Hero Academia.
    • The series starts with a child Bakugo fisting child Midoriya. Pretty disgusting to think about even without the fact that it lead to Midoriya's cancer.
    • The hair Midoriya eats to gain One For All is from All Might's pubes.
    • All Might exclaiming how Midoriya's praise "gets [him] so HARD!"
    • Midnight trying to force teenagers to fight in their underwear. Later she has a let's say interesting reaction to Aoyama's underwear. Even the other teachers are disgusted.
  • Uncertain Audience: The series wants to have its cake and eat it too when it comes to having a Darker and Edgier version of the story while also indulging in ridiculous gross-out humor and/or random Internet humor. The two halves don't mix well at all.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: The end of episode nine tries to present Uraraka as a Well-Intentioned Extremist who, despite her hatred for Midoriya, had Bakugo's best interests at heart and this is evidenced by Bakugo telling her "you did nothing wrong" after all her misdeeds. However, this rings a little hollow when in just that specific episode she revealed she manipulated Bakugo into giving Midoriya cancer, proclaimed that she was glad Midoriya was dead, offered to send Bakugo to Midoriya and then seconds later summoning an attack that could kill both Bakugo and people in the audience. Uraraka was already well-known to be a selfish bitch but the fact that her worst actions don't yield any consequences (besides making her less credible) make her come across as less of the Well-Intentioned Extremist the episode presents her as and more of an Ax-Crazy Karma Houdini who got away with her repeatedly cruel and amoral behavior, including attempted homicide. Fortunately she does get better in later seasons.
