YMMV / Mushroom Land

Go To

  • Epileptic Trees: Perhaps not to the point of accusing the author of having done shrooms (at least not more than just some), but the mushroom imagery has been interpreted as a sign Agatha is tripping heavily and the show is what she sees.
  • Everyone Is Jesus in Purgatory: The squirrel, mostly on the basis of "TEUFEL", has been speculated to be the Devil himself having some designs upon poor Agatha. Agatha is either dead and in Hell, a victim of child abuse of some form or another, or dying of something nasty like radiation poisoning.
  • Faux Symbolism: The series is full of it. Mushrooms (nuclear, or psychoactive?), apple imagery, odd Satanic associations, old educational animation on nuclear weapons and human reproductive system... Add to that that otherwise simple period-establishing details may be lost on the average foreigner, and it's no wonder fans of the show were up to their necks in Epileptic Trees. For that matter, the author explicitly stated in later interviews that he crammed the show with as many of such faux references as he could in hope of getting at least some of them to stick. (The resulting publicity went beyond his wildest dreams, as the saying goes)
  • Memetic Mutation: The series managed to launch several memes beyond the context of the show. It's difficult to say how much were they intended without Word of God on the matter, but in any case they entered popular culture.
  • Ugly Cute: Simon, the weird bird thing from the Indistinct Chatter series is as weird as he is adorable.
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not Political?: The juxtaposition of vaguely-eighties look and vaguely-nuclear imagery has led some to believe the show is meant to depict a deranged vision of nuclear war or post-nuclear reality, or even that it is an elaborate anti-Communist metaphor.
