YMMV / Movies with Mikey

  • Harsher in Hindsight: In "The Story of Harry Potter", a lot of his exploration on J. K. Rowling's personal history and philosophies — in turn their relationship to how the books and films have resonated with audiences — has become a lot more depressing in following years as Rowling and her works have become embroiled in increasing scrutiny and backlash for her increasingly controversial beliefs.
  • He Panned It, Now He Sucks!: His "Let's Talk about Thanos" video proved to be controversial, even by those who enjoy his content, mostly due to his interpretations of how the film portrays Thanos and handles its morals regarding abuse and love. While he raises a fair point about if a Superhero movie should be the place to discuss themes of abuse, many felt that his analysis was off the mark and unfair, and that Mikey was projecting his emotions onto the filmnote . The main criticism people had with this was Mikey acting like a Moral Guardian and saying that the film says abuse = love, even though the film itself critiques Thanos' logic heavily and that Thanos' abuse is still written as a negative aspect of his character, especially when the character being the target of Thanos' affection, Gamora, makes it clear she hates him without changing her views at all and the film never once shows her being wrong about it. The random rant at the end about Batman also made people criticize the video for not seemingly like it had been thought out, and the random inclusion of someone to make comments along the lines of Think of the Children! made his core argument fall flatter for people. Mikey seemed to be aware the video would've been controversial and preemptively disabled comments to avoid the Flame War, though this might've ended up making things worse.
  • Sweet Dreams Fuel: The show's about a well-spoken, passionate guy talking about how great media is and perfectly articulating what makes them so emotionally resonant with a quirky sense of humor and sincerity. This trope is to be expected.
