- Critical Research Failure: The epilogue repeats the Urban Legend that Dan White received a mild sentence for shooting Moscone and Milk, because his lawyers argued that he had been mentally impaired due to excessive consumption of Twinkies and other junk foods (the origin of the phrase "Twinkie defence"). The real argument was that White was suffering from mental problems at the time of the crime and that one of the symptoms of this was an increased consumption of junk food.
- Ensemble Dark Horse: Josh Brolin was given unanimous praise for his role as Dan White, with many critics saying he could have supported an entire movie by himself. In fact, if it wasn't for that OTHER guy, he probably would've won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar hands-down.
- Foe Yay: Harvey seems to believe Dan White is a closeted homosexual, but his friends really doubt it.
- Tear Jerker: Many scenes but especially the spontaneous candlelight procession at the end.
