• Broken Base: Fans of Crichton's work and reviewers are quite divided on Micro. Some see it as a worthy and engaging addition to Crichton's bibliography and some think it's one of the worst books to have his name attached to it. There is also a small segment of people who think it should have never been published, as Crichton never finished writing it before he died and it had to be finished by another author.
• Moral Event Horizon:
  • Depending on your point of view, Danny may have crossed it when he allowed Jenny to drown in the flash flood rather than risk falling into the water and drowning with her. He definitely crossed it when he ratted out the remaining survivors to Vin Drake, knowing full well that Drake would kill them, so he could save himself instead.
  • Vin Drake crosses this at the beginning of the story, when it's revealed he sent Hellstorm micro drones after Eric Jansen in an attempt to kill him after Eric was going to be a whistleblower and reveal Drake's shady business dealings. Drake then crosses the line about 30 more times throughout the story.
• Unintentionally Sympathetic: While Danny is The Scrappy to most, many readers were still appalled by what happened to him (getting his arm impregnated by a wasp, whose larva proceed to eat the arm from the inside out). It doesn't help that the narration and other characters are quite unconcerned with his predicament.
