- Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: With the brief appearance of Gash Gibbie and Corp-Licht Kate, the novel suddenness veers into what seems like supernatural horror - then back out of it again.
- Values Dissonance: There's some passing antiziganism, and the grotesque description of the "idiot" Gibbie is decidedly ableist (though it's worth noting that Gibbie's appearance might actually be the result of demonic parentage).
