- Ensemble Dark Horse: "Disposable Heroes" isn't referenced nearly as often as many other Metallica songs in mainstream circles, but it's amongst the most beloved songs by fans for its extremely blistering riffs even in comparison to the other songs, and the genuinely heartbreaking lyrics.
- Moral Event Horizon: The narrator of "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" crosses it when he decides to rally up the other inmates to murder every last staff member in the Bedlam House.
- Signature Song:
- The title track, perhaps one for the band overall as well. To a lesser degree, "Battery" and "Orion" count as well.
- "Orion" is considered one for Cliff Burton specifically, since he wrote the entire harmony section himself.
