YMMV / Mario Party 6

Go To

  • Best Level Ever: Clockwork Castle. Not only do you get to chase DK for Stars, but you can turn the tables on your opponents at the last minute by turning DK into Bowser and forcing them to run for their lives. Getting caught by Bowser or running into him earns you a free Shadow Star, which will subtract a Star from your total or steal twenty coins if you don't have any stars (the latter will also cause Bowser to jump to a new space).
  • Breather Level: Dizzy Rotisserie is widely ranked as among the easiest Bowser minigames in the entire series. You have 30 seconds to walk out of a room when your controls are randomized. However, brute-forcing the controls is trivial, and humans virtually never lose this one. When landing on Bowser Spaces often risks an unfortunate loser handing over valuable items, coins, or stars, getting an easy Bowser minigame like this will often elicit sighs of relief.
  • Even Better Sequel: Though Mario Party 5 was warmly received, 6 improved further into it. It overhauled the hated Capsule system into the Orb system by bringing shops back and separating them into self-use, space, and trap categories. It also features more varied boards, more interesting mini-games, and added Toadette as a new playable character.
  • Game-Breaker:
    • The Sluggish 'Shroom Orb is overpowered due to downright neutering a fundamental random tenet of the game. It slows down the die so you can effectively pick the outcome, giving a massive amount of control over your board traversal. You can use it to force a Round of Miracles or Happening Space, stall on purpose, or maneuver through a trap minefield. On top of that, they're super cheap at shops at only 5 coins and readily available.
    • The 1-vs-3 Mic Minigame "Fruit Talktail." The intended way to play is to name fruits, which cause all platforms not labeled with that fruit to temporarily drop, eliminating anyone still on those other platforms. The idea is to hear the player on the microphone name fruits and run to those platforms. However, the game is designed to pick up when a word has been spoken and find the closest match among the fruits. This means you can say random words or Portmanteaus of fruit names to effectively randomize this minigame, putting the one player on the microphone at a large advantage. ProtonJon of The Runaway Guys used this gimmick twice to win.
Jon: Guess who found a gimmick!
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • The game allowed two characters to team up and gave unique names for every single combination. While most of the team names were predictable, teaming Wario and Toadette resulted in the team name "Secret Friends", prompting players to wonder what those two could possibly have in common. Many years later, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker began with Toadette putting herself in harm's way for treasure, a moment that would do Wario proud.
    • The North American ads for the game featured kids playing pranks on Bowser, including scribbling on his face while he sleeps. Come Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, where Bowser Jr. does the same thing to his dad, kicking off the plot of Bowser's Fury.
  • Paranoia Fuel:
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: This installment introduced the "gimmick boards" that steer away from the usual "star hunt" style of gameplay and award stars through other means. Even though this was only done to give some variety between boards, not everyone was accepting of it, especially when these kinds of boards returned in 7 and 8.
