** In the Finale. Does the family truly believe that society is to blame for their lot in life and only somebody like Malcolm, who knows what it's like to live as they do, can fix it? Or are they clinging to a delusion because the alternative of admitting their life is terrible because they are deeply flawed and irresponsible people simply too depressing for them to accept?
*** Moreover, Lois has repeatedly shown herself to be a StrawHypocrite from signing the kids up for charity Despite everything being given away being better than anything they owned in order to trick the church into painting Jamie's room or pretending to fall for Jessica's manipulation in order to spend the family's hard-earned money on herself. She could be fully aware of the latter and just using the former to manipulate Malcolm.

* TheScrappy: Jessica is one of the least liked characters due to her constant JerkAss behavior and absurdly easy manipulation of the brothers, outwitting Malcolm multiple times even when it doesn't make sense for him to fall for it, and overall being a KarmaHoudini with only a FreudianExcuse RunningGag as an excuse.

It doesn't help that she essentially replaces Cynthia as a sort of not-love-interest for Malcolm, removing one of the few positive influences on his life in favor of yet another jerkass acquaintance.

* FanNickname: WordOfGod says the family's last name was originally going to be "Wilkerson" before they decided to leave it a mystery. A lot of fans including the wiki call them the Wilkersons.

** "Main plot vs. Francis subplotFrancis' subplots start out as purely hilarious during his time in military school but even before he finally moves out they became gradually more and more darkly bizarre and outright creepy (among many things a cult albeit PlayedForLaughs, finding a dead body, etc.) thus many joke that Malcolm and his family have it easy and Francis is subject to horror genre plotlines in the meanwhile. An extension of the meme instead involves pointing out how Hal's own plots are also hilariously bizarre

** In "Army Buddy," Reese thinks his friend has a crush on him when she actually likes . When the truth is revealed, neither one is weirded out or bothered by it and .

** In "Hal's Friend" Malcolm discovers that Dabney and his mother have a co-dependent relationship and helps him become his own person. When Dabney finally stands up to his mother, rather than be angered by it like they feared, she's...turned on by it.

Added DiffLines:

** Dabney's mother sounding like she's more sexually aroused than proud of his newfound confidence in "Hal's Friend."

** A season one episode had Hal and the boys playing hooky to attend a stock car race. Frankie Muniz would retire from acting to become a Formula One racecar driver before eventually becoming a NASCAR driver in 2024.

* ExpectationLowerer: The central family of the series are so absurdly dysfunctional that any real family can't help but feel better about themselves after watching. Every member is unbearable in their own way, between shrewish, abusive, harpy mother Lois, moronic buffoon father Hal, impulsive and irresponsible rebellious eldest son Francis, idiotic bully Reese, InsufferableGenius (who isn't anywhere near as much smarter than the others as he thinks he is) Malcolm, and the downright Cloudcuckoolander strange Dewey, meaning everyone has someone to relate and feel superior to.

**In “Burning Man,” . Statutory rape wasn’t something that was talked about in the aughts the way it is today. When the perpetrator was a woman it was even seen as aspirational for a teenage boy to “score” with someone older rather than seeing them as victims of a sex crime.
