• Accidental Innuendo: When discussing their plans to get married, John asks Mary "how good are you at milking?", presumably referring to milking a cow at farmwork. However, taken out of context, it sounds like something else.
• Harsher in Hindsight: Seeing Mary and Isaiah's dilemma about letting John Jr. go and attend university despite their wishes becomes much harsher when his following appearances will show it had tragic consequences for both of them: To Mary, John's life in the city changed him, and his love for her faded. And to Isaiah, John's job at a newspaper led him to investigate corruption in the city and be murdered to cover shady games, haunting his father with the loss of another child and driving his alcoholism out of control.
