- Accidental Innuendo: When the railroad owner president goes to check on the kids after they're saved, Carl admits to having yanked a lever on the caboose, setting it loose, the man says this pearl: "It’d be a strange young man who didn’t push and yank when he had the chance, huh?", and then, "I've done it myself".
- Harsher in Hindsight: Willie sells Carl a firecracker, which nearly causes a fire in the barn when he lit it inside. In real life, Willie's counterpart Willie Owens (who inspired the Willie Oleson from the Little House books) was blinded by a firecracker accident.
