YMMV / Little House On The Prairie S 10 E 3 The Last Farewell

Go To

  • Fridge Horror: Mrs. Oleson is said to be at relatives', convalescing from an illness, and she was in a similar state during the events of "Bless All the Dear Children" (which presumably takes place a few months earlier), so either she'd been sick all the way between the last Christmas and now, or she fell ill twice recently. Whichever the case, imagine the impact the news about the destruction of Walnut Grove and their own house will take on her frail condition.
    • Not only Mrs. Oleson but all the elder citizens of Walnut Grove. "Welcome to Olesonville" showed a good number of senior members of the community who were there when it was founded and lived all their lives there. Imagine what impact the destruction of their beloved home had on them, how many of those lovely older people got ill from depression, and maybe even ''died'' as a result.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Laura and Almanzo destroy their beautiful home to spite Lassiter. In Laura's book The First Four Years, Laura and Almanzo lose their house in a flash fire.
  • Tear Jerker: Everything about the destruction of Walnut Grove qualifies, but especially Reverend Alden's reaction to the end of the town he knew since its foundation. He breaks down in tears, staring at the plaque with the name of Lars Hanson, the founder. He was there when the town was founded, he knew Hanson from that time, and now has to see as his life's job gets blown up in sacrifice.
  • Values Dissonance: The rabbits set free, after Walnut Grove is destroyed, are domesticated rabbits. While they appear as a symbol of Hope at the end of the series, the area where they would remain, if New Walnut Grove was built, would be viewed in modern times as a rabbit dumping site. Not helping is the fact that rabbits are the number one abandoned pets in the United States. Though this would be viewed as a beautiful ending to a beloved tv series, rabbit advocates would be upset to see domesticated rabbits abandoned by their breeder to possibly die from the elements, hunters, disease, and wild animals. If an ending like this appeared in modern shows or movies, there would be outrage in depicting domesticated pet abandonment as okay.
