• Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Lorelei. After her breakup with Strike, Lorelei sends him a 1000 word email detailing his psychological failings, and demands they meet up in person afterwards, basically so she can yell at him for wasting ten months of her life on a 'psychological vampire' (her words). It's not really clear if the reader is meant to sympathise with her, because Strike is barely in denial about him staying with Lorelei mostly as a emotional leash, because he can't bear to be single while Robin is married. However, Strike was absolutely honest with Lorelei from the very beginning that while he would be sexually monogamous, he had no interest whatsoever in commitment or a serious relationship. So when Lorelei starts her venting it's hard not to tell her to just grow up and admit that her pain stems solely from her own bruised ego. Lorelei should have broken things off and moved on as soon as she realised she wanted more than what Strike had already stated was all he was willing to offer; instead, Lorelei deluded herself into believing her feelings for and appeal to Strike was enough to change his mind and personality, simply for the sake of becoming what Lorelei wanted him to be. It's difficult to feel sympathy for her pain, considering she brought it all on herself.
