• Ellacott moments:
  • In the last book Robin assumed that her mother was delighted that Strike had fired her from her dangerous private investigator job. At the wedding, Linda calls Strike out for firing Robin and breaking her heart.
  • The Ellacotts being furious when they find out that Matthew blocked Strike's number on Robin's phone, and one of Robin's brothers punching Matthew.
• Strike and Robin revealing to Billy that it wasn't a murder he witnessed twenty years ago, finally giving him peace.
• Della's Benevolent Boss outrage about her assistant Aamir being sexually harassed and ostracized.
• For a while, Strike and Robin believe that the child Billy may have seen murdered was Susana "Suki" Lewis, a 12-year-old girl who ran away from foster care trying to find her biological father. However, one of the locals they question reveals that Suki's father and his new family did take her in and that she's alive and happy. It's a surprisingly touching ending for a character who never physically appears in the story.
