• Harsher in Hindsight: 16 years later, Detective Benson faces the same nightmare as the Blakes of adopting a child and subsequently having a lost relative turn up and try to take custody. The show is much less sympathetic to the person trying to take her child, ultimately justifying Benson's position by writing the estranged grandmother to be deranged, evil, and treacherous; but even before this position is justified the show is unambiguously on Benson's side.
• The Woobie: Tyler and his adoptive parents without a doubt. Poor kid gets his life uprooted and ripped away from his loving family through no fault of his own. While his birth father and grandparents aren't necessarily bad people, they care more about forcing their way into Tyler's life than what Tyler actually wants for his life. The one bright spot is that Robert will allow the Blakes to stay in Tyler's life instead of cutting them out.
