• Alternate Character Interpretation: In-Universe discussion. Dr. Skoda seems to think that Jimmy really does have a mental handicap of some kind while Cragen thinks he's playing up his disability if he has one at all, as he points out fully well people with mental handicaps end up on Death Row all the time. Both interpretations are shown to possibly be valid, with Jimmy clearly not understanding what he did was rape, but the fact he failed his IQ test so close to the border (he gets 68 when 70 is an IQ high enough to to be considered not mentally challenged) only after he learns he may got to prison suggests he may be more intelligent than Skoda is willing to consider.
• Values Dissonance: It's quite jarring to hear a psychologist of all people referring to someone as "mentally retarded" given how this phrasing is now considered to be horribly ableist, but at the time of the episode (1999), this was still considered valid medical terminology.
