YMMV / Late Night with the Devil

Go To

  • Complete Monster: "Mr. Wriggles" is the nickname of the demon inhabiting the body of Lilly, a little girl who survived the mass suicide of a Satanic cult. When Lilly is brought on the late-night talk show Night Owls as a ratings stunt, "Mr. Wriggles" quickly proves that Evil Is Not a Toy, subjecting the local phony psychic Christou to a horrifying death through Mind Rape and black bile oozing out of his every orifice. Afterward, "Mr. Wriggles" possesses Lilly so he can mock the host of Night Owls, Jack Delroy, over the death of his cancer-ridden wife. The history between Jack and "Mr. Wriggles" is darker and deeper than it initially appears; as part of a nebulous deal with the demon made for the sake of his career, "Mr. Wriggles" gave Jack's innocent wife terminal cancer. In the climax, "Mr. Wriggles" fully takes over Lilly and gruesomely massacres the remaining guests and staff, saving one particularly horrible death for an arrogant skeptic who tries to pledge himself to the demon as soon as he sees irrefutable proof of its existence. Finally, the demon tricks Jack into stabbing Lilly to death on live TV, giving him the "fame" he so desperately coveted.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: A lot of people saw the movie simply to see popular character actor David Dastmalchian in the lead role for once.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Haig is kind of a Jerkass but he makes some good points. This all changes when June actually proves him right - Lilly really is possessed. Rather than joining with her and attempting to fight off the demon or even admitting she was right after an hour of sexism and rudeness, Haig pledges allegiance to Satan and swears to serve him. Even the demon seems pissed for how aggressively he kills Haig.
  • Special Effect Failure: The final massacre is pretty janky-looking, as is Christou's projectile vomit.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: Any discussion around this movie would led to people bringing up the fact that the graphic design team behind its production used AI-generated arts as still images and how much that could have done with a regular graphic designer instead of computer software with cheaper prices.
