• Broken Base: The art style. Is it good on its own, on par with another Madhouse properties of the time, and proof that Square can have gorgeous graphics even in a 2D medium, or is it a confusing mess with Off-Model designs — particularly Cloud and the Buster Sword — which put it at odds with adapting such a tragic and iconic moment of the series?
• They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: Sephiroth jumping into the Lifestream by his own free will, instead of being thrown there by Cloud, is one of the more disliked changes in this version.
