YMMV / Labyrinth of Galleria: The Moon Society

Go To

  • Contested Sequel: Mechanically, Galleria improves on many things from Refrain, such as having more selection of classes, revamped skill inheritance mechanics, and Support slots having more abilities to help out in battle. However, the actual dungeon crawling is much more of a slog. Compared to Refrain's varied dungeons with their own distinct themes and designs, most of Galleria's exploration in the first half consist of two large dungeons which look and feel similar without much to distinguish them. And after that we have the randomly generated dungeons in the second half, which pretty much nobody likes.
  • Enjoy the Story, Skip the Game: Aside from Refrain's usual character and party building, many agree that the gameplay of Galleria is a slog, with multiple dungeons either being too long or too short, recycling the same tileset over and over, and the basic gameplay loop more or less boiling down to having to wander around, interact with something, then doing a Witch Report multiple times in succession without much of a hint of where to go unless you comb the map. Special mention goes to the final dungeon, The Grand Cathedral, which goes on for over three thousand floors. The story, on the other hand, has garnered more praise for its strong characters and the developing relationship between Eureka and Nachiroux.
  • Nightmare Fuel: For a sequel to Refrain, this should be expected. From Geaux slaughtering the Moon Society and threatening to rape Nachiroux, to Eureka's suicide in the first Fission Mailed end, and especially the revelation that Queen Luvalier ate the corpse of a child to become more youthful, before deciding she simply needed to eat more when it didn't work, the story isn't exactly for the faint of heart.
  • Underused Game Mechanic: During the first section of the game, you will visit multiple dungeons that have difficult terrain to travel. If you go underwater or into the darkness-infested areas, you will quickly run out of stamina and begin taking massive amounts of damage over time, which can only be circumvented by doing a Witch Report and gaining an upgrade for Fantie that allows for traversal of these areas. While this immediately brings to mind all the new possibilities for puzzles, secret finding, and terrain traversal, most upgrades aside from Jump just aren't used much beyond their requisite dungeons, and if they are it's only a handful of tiles at a time to provide a shortcut or alternate path around enemies.
