YMMV / Kara of Rokyn

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Dark Mark's depiction of Kara Zor-El as someone who never managed to fit in among Earth people, never had any significant relationships, and was always eager to head back to Kandor and reluctant to leave the Bottle City doesn't gel well with her predominant Pre-Crisis portrayal.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple: Although Kara hooks up with scriptwriter Van-Ol, most of fans would rather prefer Kara get back together with Brainiac 5 or Dick Malverne, her traditional canonical love interests.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • Superman and Supergirl drifting apart gradually isn't liable to sit well with fans of both characters who disliked how their relationship became cold and distant during the New 52.
    • There's some kind of open trade between Earth and Rokyn and relationships are apparently friendly… in contrast with what happened in New Krypton.
    • Kara moves to Rokyn because she finds she can't pretend to be an Earthwoman anymore. Still, when New Krypton came out several years later, Kara found out she didn't fit in among Kryptonians anymore after living several months in Earth.
    • A scene written in 2002 has Kara and her clone Linda gleefully plan to troll Dick Malverne as payback for all those times he tried to expose Kara's secret. In 2003, a canon story has Dick confess he always knew Kara's identity before dying from cancer.
  • Heartwarming in Hindsight: Written several years before Zor-El was turned into a crazy, evil jerkass and Alura into an abusive, evil matriarch, the scenes where both parents are portrayed as good people determined to do their best for their daughter are a delight.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • In "Pain and Jasmine" Lady Shiva trains Kara; an unexpected development since Pre-Crisis Supergirl never met her. Flash-forward fifteen years and both girls are schoolmates in DC Super Hero Girls, with Shiva staying over at the Kent Farm during the summer break.
    • Zor-El muttering he'd look stupid in a pair of trunks, years before the "Should Superman wear red trunks?" fan debates.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: The story wants us to think of Kara's manager Nar-Es as supportive and understanding during his last scene, but he comes across as an ungrateful hypocrite throwing Superman under the bus in order to assuage Kara's guilty conscience.
