YMMV / Kabuki Touken Ranbu

Go To

  • Audience-Alienating Premise: True to its name, it is a Kabuki theatre production of Touken Ranbu, created with the intention of drawing in fans of both and introducing Kabuki theatre to new audiences. However, while not a bomb of a production, it failed to capture the attention of Touken Ranbu fans in the same way that Musical Touken Ranbu and Touken Ranbu Stage did on their debuts, owing to its distinct aesthetic and vocal presentation, as well as costuming unique to Kabuki theatre. The theatrical release and positive word-of-mouth would help spread interest in the work among Touken Ranbu fans, although it still has yet to reach the level of fandom wide interest previous the theater productions have.
  • Funny Moments:
    • Throughout the scene where Kobaihime confesses her love to Mikazuki Munechika and performs a dance for him, he looks unimpressed to the point of annoyance.
    • In a meta funny way, Kogitsunemaru blaming Mikazuki for his lack of screentime, since Mikazuki's actor is also the director and scriptwriter for the play.
  • Ho Yay: Ashikaga Yoshiteru and Mikazuki Munechika. Mikazuki still has a strong attachment to Yoshiteru, one of his former masters from his time spent as a sword, and after spending time with him, Yoshiteru develops feelings for Mikazuki and asks him to become his vassal, telling him that whenever he looks up at the moon, he thinks of Mikazuki because of his pure heart. Naturally, this ends tragically due to Mikazuki being made to kill him to preserve history.
    • Both Yoshiteru and Kobaihime confessed to Mikazuki in the same way, saying that when they look up at the crescent moon they think of him, but while he gives an annoyed look to Kobaihime before rejecting her, Mikazuki actually looks slightly embarrassed and taken aback by Yoshiteru's confession, like his crush reciprocated his feelings.
  • Memetic Mutation: Drawing the Touken Danshi with their original designs but with hairstyles from the play became a fairly popular thing to do following the performances.
  • Tear Jerker: The climactic scene in which Mikazuki Munechika fights and kills his former owner Ashikaga Yoshiteru to preserve history after the Historical Revisionists sabotage his assassination. Mikazuki's emotions, which were previously portrayed as lacking in humanity, are clearly visible during this sequence due to his lingering attachment to Yoshiteru, and the music is dramatic, emphasizing the pain even more.
