- Complete Monster: John Dee, who also made several cameos as a member of the Legion of Doom, started out as a minor convict who only fantasized of killing the Justice League to make a name for himself among super villains, but after an experimental machine gives him ESP, Dee quickly decides to make his fantasy a reality. Becoming Doctor Destiny, his first action is to take revenge on the wife who left him while he was in prison. As she's sleeping, Destiny goes into her dream and begins to torture her for hours. Eventually, the nightmare causes her to have a cardiac arrest and die of terror. Destiny then invades the dreams of each member of the Justice League, trying to use their worst fears to kill them one-by-one. These nightmares include making Superman think he killed his friends with out-of-control superpowers; and burying the claustrophobic Hawkgirl alive.
- Hilarious in Hindsight: Six months after this episode aired, Volcana's voice actress Peri Gilpin appeared in the Frasier episode "And Frasier Makes Three", in which her character, Roz Doyle, accepts a date with an ex-convict and explains to her friends, "I don't know any guy who's not a little fascinated by fire."
- Inferred Holocaust: In Superman's nightmare, he accidentally destroys Metropolis. He would presumably have killed a lot more individuals than the three seen if it hadn't been, well...
- Nightmare Fuel: It has a substantial section on the page.
- Paranoia Fuel: Dr. Destiny. Go to sleep, and he can stick you in a dreamscape of your nightmares where you'll be trapped until you die of cardiac arrest. There is no hiding from him. You can be anywhere in the world and he can find you even if he doesn't know where you are. If you are in close proximity to him, his powers will affect you even if you're wide awake.
- Tear Jerker: On top of being pure Nightmare Fuel, the League's nightmares are pretty depressing as well. Both Superman and Flash are afraid that they'll lose control of their powers — Superman accidentally killing his loved ones and Flash trapped in hyper-speed with no way to stop. Green Lantern is afraid that he'll lose touch with his true self and become nothing more than a puppet for the ring, as represented by the people in his hometown being afraid of him and speaking some alien language he doesn't understand.
