- Out of the Ghetto: While unashamedly a horror film, Hour of the Wolf generally gets a pass from critics for being an Ingmar Bergman film.
- Spiritual Successor: Bergman acknowledged that he viewed it specifically as a follow-up to Persona, bringing the subtle Horror elements of that film more in focus. He also re-used the names "Alma" and "Vogler" from that film.
