YMMV / Henry Huggins

Go To

  • Awesome Moments: Henry landing a twenty-nine-pound king salmon with his bare hands in Henry and Ribsy.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: In Henry and Beezus, the restless Ramona causes a scene at the bike auction by repeatedly shouting "I'm going to throw up!" which Beezus says she often shouts to get her own way. Years later, in the sixth book of Ramona's own series, she comes down with the stomach flu and really does throw up in her classroom, which utterly humiliates her.
    • Also, given our understanding of body issues and anxiety, people throwing up isn't something that should be played for laughs.
  • Unintentional Period Piece: Henry and his friends never play video games and rarely watch TV, and they do things like compete over paper routes and scrounge for junk to sell to the garbage man.
  • Values Dissonance: In Henry and the Clubhouse (1962), for Halloween, Beezus dresses up as a gypsy and Henry dresses up as a stereotypical Native American with face paint and a feathered headband. Neither of those costumes would go over well today, as they would be considered racist.
    • Beezus being a tomboy who can get along well with the boys, unlike Mary Jane, hasn't aged well. It makes sense in the context of a story written for boys in the 50s, but it's teaching those boys that anything girl related is... if not bad, then lesser.
