YMMV / Greenmantle

Go To

  • Fair for Its Day: Buchan's writing is very jingoistic when read with modern eyes, but it's still not as bad as some other authors writing at the time; in fact, when compared to works such as Bulldog Drummond, Hannay and Buchan are almost progressive. Greenmantle in particular shows some knowledge of and respect for Islam. Still, let's not go overboard: these are books where the highest praise one character can give to another is to call him "a white man".
  • Ho Yay: It's implied that von Stumm has the hots for Hannay, although this is in no way reciprocated.
  • Values Dissonance: There are times when the book topples over into sentiments that would be unacceptable today. At one point, Hannay in the narration says that while German people can't "get outside themselves", Jewish Germans can, "and that is why, if you look into the matter, you will find that the Jew is at the back of most German enterprises." In another passage, Blenkiron manages to insult two nationalities by saying that the Turks "haven't the organizing power to manage the Irish vote in a ward election."
